Chemical Waste Treatment and Recovery

CSG does more than collect and transport chemical waste. We treat approximately 10% of the UK’s hazardous chemical waste, with much of it managed at our Cadishead facility—one of the country’s largest hazardous waste treatment sites. Our specialists assess each waste stream and select the most appropriate treatment, recovery or disposal route.

frequently asked questions about the disposal of chemical waste

What is chemical waste?

Chemical waste refers to any discarded material that contains hazardous chemicals that are harmful to humans or the environment.

As leading specialist waste management providers, we’re equipped to handle all kinds of waste – including hazardous and non-hazardous waste, as well as sewage and septic tank waste. For businesses that require it, we also provide total waste management services for an end-to-end solution.

We can safely dispose of most types of chemical waste, including highly reactive and oxidising chemicals. Here are some examples of the kinds of chemicals we can remove and dispose of from your site:

  • Acids and alkalis
  • Metal complexes
  • Cyanide and sulphites
  • Sludges and suspensions
  • Fuming acids such as oleum, chlorosulphonic acid and acidic solvents
  • Water reactive chemicals such as thionyl chloride or phosphorus oxychloride
  • Strong oxidising agents such as chromic acid, potassium permanganate and sodium hypochlorite
  • Solvents
  • Drums contaminated with water-reactive residues and other toxic chemicals
  • Asbestos

Where technically and legally appropriate, our chemists reuse, recycle or recover chemical waste through specialist treatment processes. This can include using one compatible waste stream to treat another, removing contaminants or recovering suitable materials. Non-recyclable waste may also be sent for energy recovery where an authorised route is available, helping to reduce reliance on incineration without recovery and landfill.

However, not every chemical waste stream can be recycled or recovered. Certain PFAS-containing wastes, for example, may require high-temperature incineration without energy recovery. Treating acidic or alkaline waste can also produce residues such as filter cake that must be sent to an authorised hazardous-waste landfill. The final route depends on the waste’s composition, contamination and available treatment options, and we will explain the proposed outcome before collection.

To provide you with an accurate quote, we’ll require you to share the following:

  • Safety data sheet (if available)
  • UN number (if known)
  • Waste composition (we cannot remove any unknown waste – this must be identified first)
  • Volume
  • The packaging the waste is contained in (e.g. small containers, drums, IBCs, in bulk liquid form)
  • Location and access

Yes. We’re happy to advise on suitable storage and packaging for chemical waste. If you need replacement containers, let us know and we can also provide these at an additional cost during your waste collection.

CSG provides hazardous waste disposal services for commercial and industrial customers, so our collections are generally best suited to businesses with larger quantities of waste or regular disposal requirements.

Our minimum disposal charge is £150, excluding consignment note and transport fees. Because of this, we may not be the most cost-effective option for very small quantities of domestic hazardous waste, such as individual tins of paint, household chemicals or small DIY waste items.

If you are a business and are unsure whether your waste meets our collection requirements, please get in touch with our team. We can advise on the most suitable and cost-effective disposal option based on the waste type, quantity, packaging and location.

Most chemical waste collections take place during normal operating hours. However, we may be able to accommodate specific access, permit or operational restrictions on a case-by-case basis. Availability depends on factors including the waste type, site location, transport requirements and receiving facility opening hours.

For urgent incidents outside normal working hours, our emergency spill response service may be able to assist. Please tell us about any restrictions when making your enquiry so we can confirm the available options.

Each waste stream is assessed according to its composition, hazardous properties and recovery potential. It is then directed to an appropriate treatment, recovery or disposal route, with much of the waste managed through our specialist Cadishead treatment facility.

Physicochemical treatment uses controlled chemical and physical processes to reduce hazardous properties and separate contaminants. Depending on the waste, this may involve neutralisation, oxidation, reduction, controlled dissolution, precipitation or filtration.

Where technically viable, we prioritise recovery. Metals may be recovered from suitable liquids, while solvent-based and high-calorific wastes may be directed to specialist fuel or energy-recovery routes. Not every waste is suitable, so each stream is assessed individually.

Our specialists consider the waste’s source, composition, hazardous properties, physical form and recovery potential. Sampling or additional analysis may be required where the composition is complex or information is incomplete.

Our facilities can manage a range of complex wastes, including certain water-reactive and oxidising materials. Acceptance is subject to a specialist assessment to confirm compatibility, packaging requirements and the safest treatment route.
