Oily Rag Disposal & Collection Services
For a safe and compliant way to manage contaminated wipes, absorbents and oily cloths produced by your business, CSG is on hand to help. Our oily rag disposal service supports hundreds of UK manufacturing, engineering and automotive businesses in transporting and treating these materials, with clear documentation and traceable recovery routes where appropriate.
Where compliant recovery routes exist, eligible oily rag waste can be routed for recovery, including Energy-from-Waste processes and Transfrontier Shipment (TFS) options where suitable. This can allow your paperwork to reflect a recovery outcome (R-code) rather than disposal.
We collect and manage oily rags, absorbents, wipes and other oil-contaminated materials as part of our nationwide waste oil services.

From Oily Rags to Energy Recovery
CSG prioritises recovery for eligible oily rags, wipes and absorbents. We assess the waste and its contamination before directing suitable materials to an authorised Energy-from-Waste facility, where their calorific value is used to generate energy.
This normally takes place through a regulated Trans frontier Shipment (TFS) route because a suitable UK recovery outlet is not currently available for this waste stream. Where additional contamination prevents energy recovery, we arrange an alternative compliant treatment or disposal route.
- Energy recovery prioritised wherever technically suitable
- Each waste stream assessed for additional contamination
- Regulated and traceable TFS routes to authorised recovery facilities
- Alternative compliant routes where recovery is not possible

Frequently Asked Questions About Disposing of Oily Rags
How do you dispose of oily rags in the UK?
Oily rags and contaminated wipes are classed as hazardous waste when they contain oils, solvents, fuels, paints, inks, resins, or other hazardous substances. Although the cloth itself may not be hazardous, the residues it carries can create fire, health, and environmental risks, so the waste must be classified, stored, transported and treated correctly. As such, you should never dispose of oily rags in your business’s general waste bin. Businesses are legally required to use a licensed waste carrier, like CSG, to dispose of this type of waste.
Are oily rags considered hazardous waste?
They can be! If they’re contaminated with oils, fuels, solvents, paints or other hazardous substances, oily rags can be classed as hazardous waste. That’s why it’s critically important to work with an experienced team who can assess your waste stream and advise on the right classification and handling requirements.
What types of oily rags does CSG collect?
We can collect a range of oily cleaning materials produced through industrial, engineering and maintenance activities, such as:
- Oil-contaminated rags
- Solvent wipes
- Grease-contaminated cloths
- Paint-contaminated wipes
- Spill response absorbents
- Workshop cleaning materials
Can CSG collect rags contaminated with solvents or paint?
Yes. We can manage oily rags contaminated with solvents, paints, fuels, oils, and similar substances, subject to assessment and acceptance criteria.
How should oily rags be stored before collection?
Oily rags should be stored safely in suitable containers away from ignition sources and protected from leaks or contamination. Depending on the waste material, this may include sealed drums, lidded containers, UN-rated packaging and heavy duty bags within appropriate containment systems. Not sure on the best way to store your oily rags? Our team is happy to advise.
What is TFS?
TFS stands for Transfrontier Shipment and is the regulated process used for transporting waste between countries for recovery or disposal at suitably authorised facilities. Eligible oily rag waste may be routed through TSF recovery routes if appropriate and compliant.
What if our oily rags are mixed with other waste?
Mixed waste streams can affect classification, handling requirements and recovery suitability, therefore we’d recommend segregating this type of waste from other streams (like general waste, packaging materials and chemicals) wherever possible.
Can CSG resupply containers after collection?
Yes. We can arrange replacement containers and storage equipment following collection for an additional charge.
Do you accept loose oily rags?
In most cases, oily rags should be bagged or contained before collection to support safe handling and transportation. Our waste experts are able to advise on suitable packaging and containment based on your waste stream – just get in touch with your query.
What happens to oily rags after CSG collects them?
We assess the waste and its contamination to determine the most appropriate route. Eligible oily rags, wipes and absorbents are normally sent to an authorised Energy-from-Waste facility, where their calorific value is used to generate energy. If additional contamination prevents recovery, we arrange an alternative compliant treatment or disposal route.
Where this recovery route is suitable, CSG will package the oily rags and manage the compliant Transfrontier Shipment (TFS) arrangements as part of the service
